What is the Purpose of a Receptacle Outlet?

Electrical outlets, also known as power points, are sockets that connect electrical devices to the electricity supply. They are usually installed by electrical contractors and help eliminate unnecessary clutter of electrical wiring.

Receptacles are used to plug in appliances, lamps, and other electronic devices. They are designed to safely transfer electricity from the wall to the device.

We’ve put together this list of the most common questions we hear so you can make sure you’re following the right rules and doing things safely.

What is the most common electrical receptacle?

In most homes, the 3-prong outlet is going to be the most common one you see but it’s not the only one you will see.

Here are three different types of outlets that electrical contractors may use:

  1. 120-volt outlets
  2. 240-volt outlets
  3. and GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlets

The 120-volt outlets are used for most appliances and devices in your home. The 240-volt outlets are designed for large appliances like washing machines and dryers because they have more capacity than 120 volts. The GFCI outlets have additional circuitry that helps prevent electrocution by shutting off power if it detects excess current flow.

Does every wall need a receptacle?

The National Electrical Code requires that every kitchen, bedroom, living room, family room, and any other room with dedicated living space have an electrical outlet. There should be at least one outlet for every twelve feet of floor space.

Is it OK for electrical contractors to install outlets upside down?

At one time, it was recommended to install the receptacles upside down but there is no code requirement that says an outlet receptacle should be installed one way or the other. So, if you install an outlet receptacle, you have the option of putting the round grounding slot at the top or bottom.

How many receptacles should be in a bedroom?

The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires that every room have at least one electrical outlet. In a bedroom, the NEC requires one electrical outlet per wall.

The total number may vary depending on the size of the room, but we recommend at least one wall outlet for every 12 feet of wall space and one ceiling outlet for every 8 feet of ceiling height. What is the maximum distance between receptacles on the same wall?

The Code says that the maximum distance between receptacles in a straight line cannot exceed 3 feet. If there are obstructions (like windows), you can increase that distance to 4 feet. If you have more than one circuit serving the area, you can increase it even further – up to 6 feet (if there are no obstructions).
